This American Life – Studs Terkel – Strange Fruit
Listening to This American Life. The second segment of the show have incredible accounts collected by the late great Chicago reporter Studs Terkel. The voices of the people who lived through the Great Depression seem to ecco down through the corridors of time. It is strange how much you can mirror the situation here in Iceland to the stories of these people.
Thinking about the situation in the states during this time and hearing Lady Day sing in the show made me think about Strange Fruit. The song was first performed in 1939, when Amercia was still being hit by Recession of 1937. I know this song is about race but it is also about hate, hate which lives in a enviroment like we are seeing today. To me it is a reminder of what may not happen in the hard times ahead of us.
p.s. Who was that masked celebrity?
